Catechesis – The Crucifixion: Fifth Sorrow of Our Lady – Fr Peter George Flynn OFM

Published 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Description

Fr. Peter turns to the fifth sorrow of Our Lady: standing at the foot of the cross as her son died. Drawing on St. John Chrysostom’s beautiful insight that the very means by which the devil conquered (a virgin, a tree, a death) were the same means by which Christ defeated him. He explores Our Lady’s role as the new Eve who stood firm where Eve fell.

He then reads at length from St. Peter of Alcantara’s vivid meditation on the crucifixion, dwelling on how Our Lady’s presence at the cross deepened Christ’s own suffering, and from Cardinal Newman on why she is called both Queen of Martyrs and Singular Vessel of Devotion. The episode closes with a dialogue from the Imitation of Mary in which Our Lady tells the believer where she found the strength to stand: by entering into her son’s heart and making all his sentiments her own.
