In 1993, Lorena Bobbitt severed the penis of her husband, John Wayne Bobbitt, following what she alleged had been years of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. John denied the abuse allegations and was later acquitted of marital sexual assault. Lorena was subsequently tried for malicious wounding and found not guilty by reason of temporary insanity.
