Clarksville Community Grieves: A Candlelight Vigil and Promises of Support Following a School Bus Crash

The Clarksville community is mourning the loss of two Kenwood Middle School students killed in a school bus crash on March twenty-seventh in Carroll County, Tennessee. The incident occurred when the bus, en route to an electric go-kart competition in Jackson, collided with a state dump truck and a Chevrolet Trailblazer on Highway seventy at the Cedar Grove intersection. Seven others were airlifted to hospitals.

A candlelight vigil held the following evening at the school brought out approximately two hundred fifty parents, students, officials, and neighbors to honor the victims. The event was organized quickly through Facebook by Pastor Dewayne Carter, who emphasized the need for the town to unite in prayer and stand strong together.

Students linked arms, hugging and crying, while parents held close in the quiet crowd. State Representative Ronnie Glynn highlighted the impact of the loss on the entire community and promised state support to help the community heal. School board member Jimmie Garland vowed to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of students.

County Commissioner Lisa Prichard referred to the students as new angels and urged the community to heal and grow stronger. Board member Carol Berry echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of prayer and faith in moving forward.

In response to the tragedy, the school districts superintendent has called for all students to wear black and gold—Kenwoods colors—on Monday, with time set aside district-wide for reflection and support for the families. Clarksville is coming together, one step at a time.
