On March 29, 1977, thousands of people in the Soviet city of Petrozavodsk witnessed a massive glowing object drifting across the night sky. Witnesses described a brilliant sphere surrounded by spreading beams of light that looked like a floating jellyfish. The event, later called the Petrozavodsk Phenomenon, became one of the most famous UFO sightings of the Cold War. Scientists later suggested the mysterious display may have been caused by a Soviet satellite launch, but many witnesses insisted the strange object behaved unlike any rocket or aircraft.
