When We Are Too Tired

“He came and found them sleeping.” (from Matthew 26:43)

Sometimes we are just too tired to do what we know we should.

Too tired to show up the way we want to.

Too tired to be who we are trying to be.

This is where the disciples were near the end of the Gospel of Matthew.

They had given up everything.

They had followed him everywhere.

They had done the best they could to learn, grow, and serve.

But in this moment, they just couldn’t.

There are moments when we are willing but not able to be

the parent, child, neighbor, friend, sibling, or coworker we want to be.

This wasn’t the end for the disciples.

Jesus didn’t dismiss or abandon them.

They eventually recentered, reenergized, and re-engaged.

Sometimes we have to allow ourselves—and each other—

the time and space to rest.

Even when it’s not convenient.

Because sometimes, it’s necessary.
