Spiritual gifts explained honestly — including one of the most misunderstood ones — is where Josh Gonzalez takes this message. Starting in Mark 10, he shows that Jesus deliberately redefined greatness as service, not status, before tackling a common source of confusion in 1 Corinthians 14: the gift of tongues. Gonzalez walks through what actually happened at Pentecost — the Holy Spirit giving the disciples the ability to speak real, existing languages so Jewish pilgrims from across the world could understand the gospel — and traces how, centuries later, this got mixed with mysticism and spiritualism in a way Scripture never describes.

The real weight of the message is in 1 Corinthians 12: "there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit." Gonzalez argues that churches — including his own — regularly rank certain gifts above others, treating a gifted preacher as more "Spirit-filled" than the person who greets at the door, teaches Sabbath school, or serves lunch. Using the story of the first deacons in Acts 6, who were "full of the Holy Spirit" simply to serve tables, he makes the case that no gift is more important than another, and that leaving 80% of a congregation as spectators is a failure to understand what spiritual gifts are actually for.

This is a challenging, practical call for every believer to identify and actually use whatever gift they've been given — not just admire the gifts of others.
