कस्मिंश्चित् गुरुकुले गुरुः शिष्यान् बहुधा परीक्ष्य योग्यान् एव शिष्यत्वेन स्वीकरोति स्म । अथ कदाचित् प्रवेशावसरे गुरुः शिष्यान् अपृच्छत् 'भवद्भिः किं किम् आनीतम्? स्वस्य गृहकुलादिविषये वदन्तु' इति । सर्वे आत्मना आनीतस्य धनस्य वा सुवर्णस्य वा धान्यस्य वा विवरणं, स्वस्य पितृपितामहादयः कीदृशाः इत्यादिकं च श्रावितवन्तः । किन्तु कश्चन तरुणेन किमपि न आनीतम् आसीत् । स्वस्य पित्रादीनां‌ विषये किमपि न अवदत् अपि । किमर्थम् एवम् इति गुरुणा पृष्टे सः अवदत् 'मम कुलविषये कथनेन किम्? अत्र मम ज्ञानं विस्तार्य भगवत्साक्षात्कारं प्राप्तुम् इच्छामि । ज्ञानप्राप्तिः साधनमार्गे अग्रे गमनं च मम लक्ष्यम्' इति । तस्य समुचितां दृष्टिं दृष्ट्वा गुरुः सहर्षः जातः ।
(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)

In a certain gurukula, the teacher tested students in many ways and accepted only the worthy. At one admission occasion, he asked the students, “What have you brought? Tell me about your family and background”. Most described the wealth, gold, or grain they had brought, and spoke of their fathers and grandfathers. But one young man had brought nothing and said nothing about his lineage. When the teacher asked why, he replied: “What is the use of speaking about my family? I have come here to expand my knowledge and attain realization of God. My aim is learning and progress on the path of discipline”. Seeing his right attitude, the teacher was delighted.
