EU-US Trade Deal Advances, Businesses Seek Refunds

EU Parliament Approves US Trade Deal, Despite Tariff Concerns and Trade Practice Investigations

The European Union parliament has voted to move forward with a key trade deal with the United States, known as the Turnberry agreement. This deal involves the EU dropping tariffs on American goods like aircraft, chemicals, and farm products, while the US sets a fifteen percent rate on European imports and keeps fifty percent duties on steel and aluminum. The EU also commits to buying $750 billion worth of US energy products by 2028.

However, the deal faced a setback earlier this year when the Supreme Court struck down President Trumps broadest tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Lawmakers have now added safeguards, such as a clause to suspend the deal if US tariffs exceed fifteen percent on the EU, and an expiration in March 2028 unless renewed.

Businesses have been impacted by these trade shifts, with over 2,000 companies filing lawsuits for more than $130 billion in refunds on invalid tariffs. The US Customs is implementing a four-step electronic system to process claims, aiming to return money to importers soon.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has launched investigations into trade practices of sixty countries under Section 301, and temporary ten percent tariffs are in place for 150 days, which could increase to fifteen percent. To address rising energy costs from the Middle East conflict, Trump has waived the Jones Act for sixty days, allowing foreign ships to transport oil, gas, and other fuels between US ports.

With the EU commission now negotiating final details with member states and refund systems in place, global trade tensions appear to be easing, although businesses remain vigilant for the next policy twist.
