When We’ve Been Discounted and Dismissed
“The stone the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone.”
How many times have we been overlooked, marginalized, or dismissed?
(Psalm 118:22)
The psalmist first spoke these words for the people of Israel. They had lived through seasons of defeat, discouragement, and being counted out.
The Gospel writers remembered these words when they told the story of Jesus. Israel did not count for much in the eyes of Rome, and Jesus counted for even less.
But this verse reminds us:
our skeptics and our critics do not have the final word.
The power of God at work within us can restore what has been lost,
heal what has been broken,
and free what has been held captive.
And we—like living stones once rejected—
are being shaped and placed into something greater than ourselves.
We may be dismissed by the world,
but we are called by God.
