Compassion Meditation for Difficult Moments
Description
In this meditation, I explore the roots of compassion and what it means to be present to suffering.
Compassion, at its simplest, means to be with suffering. It is not always an emotional response, but often a quiet, steady willingness to remain present, even when we cannot fix or remove what is difficult.
We begin by settling into stillness and becoming aware of the breath. From there, you are gently invited to bring to mind an area of suffering, either within yourself or in the world around you. Rather than turning away, we practise staying, holding this experience with care and gentleness.
Like holding a small bird in the hand, the practice is not to grasp or control, but to be present with sensitivity and respect. In doing so, we discover that compassion is not something we force, but something that can grow through attention and awareness.
As the meditation deepens, this compassionate presence expands outward, allowing us to hold both personal and shared suffering within a wider field of peace.
This meditation offers a moment of calm, whether you are pausing during the day or winding down before sleep, helping you meet suffering with steadiness, openness and compassion.
