A Prayer for When We Want to Encourage Others

Loving God,

you know how often we want to help,

but do not always know what to say.

We have spoken too quickly at times,

and missed the chance to truly understand.

We have meant to encourage,

yet sometimes caused hurt.

Teach us to listen before we speak.

Give us hearts that are patient,

spirits that are attentive,

and minds that are open to learn.

Form in us a deeper compassion—

that we may notice what others are carrying,

and respond with care and wisdom.

Shape our words,

that they may bring comfort and life.

And teach us when silence is the better gift,

when presence speaks more than words.

May we become people

who sustain the weary with love,

in what we say and in how we listen.

Amen.
