पूर्वं कश्चित् राजा सर्वदा संन्यासिनः धर्मोपदेशकादीन् च मोक्षमार्गं पृच्छति स्म । सर्वैः स्वमत्यनुगुणं दत्तेन उत्तरेण नृपः सन्तुष्टमनस्कः न जातः । अथ कदाचित् कश्चन संन्यासी 'राजा सम्यक् बोधनीया' इति विचिन्त्य मध्यरात्रसमये राजभवनं गत्वा हर्म्यतलम् आरूढः । निद्राम् अलभमानः राजा झटिति उत्थाय 'कः भवान्?’ इति पृष्टे संन्यासी 'विनष्टं मम उष्ट्रम् अन्वेष्टुम् अहमत्र आगतः' इत्यवदत् । उच्चैः हसता नृपेण अवदत् 'किं हर्म्यतले उष्ट्रः केनापि कदाचिदपि प्राप्येत?' इति । सहासं संन्यासिना अपि उक्तं 'मोक्षः प्रासादे उपविशता केनचिद् यदि प्राप्येत तर्हि हर्म्यतले उष्ट्रः कथं न प्राप्येत?’ इति । संन्यासिनः कथनस्य आशयं ज्ञात्वा राजा प्रासादं परित्यज्य संन्यासं गृहीतवान् ।

Once, a king often asked monks and teachers about the path to liberation, but was never satisfied with their answers. One night, a monk thought, “The king must be properly awakened.” He went to the palace at midnight and climbed to the upper floor. The sleepless king suddenly rose and asked, “Who are you?” The monk replied, “I came here searching for my lost camel”. The king laughed loudly: “How could a camel ever be found on the palace roof?” The monk responded with equal humor: “If someone sitting in a palace could attain liberation, then why not find a camel on the roof?” Understanding the deeper meaning of the monk’s words, the king renounced his palace and accepted the life of renunciation.
