Description
Very Reverend Doctor Houston McKelvey, former Dean of Saint Annes Cathedral in Belfast, passed away suddenly. A service of thanksgiving will be held on Wednesday at one PM in Agherton Parish Church, followed by a private cremation. Donations for the Belfast Black Santa Sit-Out campaign are requested instead of flowers. McKelvey, a passionate sailor, leaves behind his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and grandsons. He was a long-serving member and enthusiastic yachtsman at Coleraine Yacht Club, an author, broadcaster, and community servant. He received an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2010 and served nearly thirty years as a chaplain with the Territorial Army. McKelvey retired as Dean in 2011 after leading the Black Santa tradition that raised millions for charities since 1976. He was remembered as a good and faithful servant, a dear friend, and a valued supporter.
