Steven Hanna, MD, shares how his fellowship experience was priceless in that it gave him the tools to succeed as a surgeon as well as a businessman.

Hello, and welcome to "Beauty and the Biz," where we'll discuss the business and marketing side of plastic surgery.

As always, I'm your host, Catherine Maley, author of "Your Aesthetic Practice – What Your Patients Are Saying." and consultant to plastic surgeons, helping them get more patients and more profits.

This Fellowship Was Priceless

In this episode of "Beauty and the Biz," I interviewed Dr. Steven Hanna. Currently, he is a Royal College-certified plastic surgeon. For three years, he has practiced in Toronto and Oshawa, Canada.

During our talk, we discussed why this fellowship was priceless for his career. Specifically, he trained at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat. There, he worked with top aesthetic surgeons to refine his skills. Consequently, this accelerated his professional growth. Furthermore, he later joined a well-established practice with a long-time colleague.

Interestingly, this practice is unique because both surgeons' wives are also physicians there. Together, they work under one roof. Therefore, they offer a full spectrum of surgical and nonsurgical procedures.

Key takeaways from our conversation:

  • How mentorship from top surgeons shapes long-term success

  • Why specialization helps surgeons stand out

  • The importance of reputation early in your career

  • The secret behind his happy business partnership

Naturally, the fastest-growing surgeons make intentional decisions. Instead of just working harder, they focus on positioning and differentiation. Ultimately, this episode shows why this fellowship was priceless for his positioning.

P.S. After decades of working with top practices, I have noticed a clear pattern. Specifically, the busiest surgeons do not always have better marketing. Instead, they run tighter systems.

Enjoy!
