केनचित् चतुरेण जनेन मृत्योः मैत्री सम्पादिता आसीत् । कदाचित् सः मृत्युम् अवदत् 'मैत्रीकारणतः एकं निवेदनं यत् प्राणहरणात् पूर्वं भवता अहं सकृत् स्मारणीयः' इति । 'त्रिचतुरवारम् एव स्मारणं करिष्यामि' इत्यवदत् मृत्युः । तस्मात् सन्तुष्टः जनः वर्षाणि यावत् स्वच्छन्देन जीवनम् अकरोत् । कदाचित् मृत्युः तदीयान् प्राणान् अपहर्तुम् यदा आगतः तदा 'स्मारणमेव न कृत्वा आगतः भवान्' इति अवदत् सः जनः । तदा मृत्युः अवदत् यत् चतुर्वारं स्मारणे कृते अपि तेषाम् आशयम् अनवगच्छन् तेषाम् उपेक्षां दर्शितवान् भवान् इति । ते चत्वारः सन्देशाः के ? ते कथं अनेन जनेन उपेक्षिताः ? अन्ते मृत्युः तस्य प्राणान् अपहरति वा ? इति कुतूहलेन कथाम् इमां शृण्वन्तु ।

A clever man once befriended Death. He requested: “Because of our friendship, please remind me once before taking my life.” Death replied: “I will remind you three or four times”.
