Description
Fr. Eamonn McCarthy and Mary Hooton reflect on the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s Well, the Gospel for the Third Sunday of Lent. Fr. Eamonn explores how this remarkable scene — Christ revealing himself directly as Messiah to a woman of poor reputation, at the ‘wrong’ hour, in the ‘wrong’ place — speaks of the thirst God has for each of us, and the humility required to let go of settled traditions and receive the living water he offers. Mary shares a striking image of the scene from a painting at Glenstal Abbey, and a story from Father León’s talk at the Divine Mercy Conference about a monk who nearly drowns his student to teach him what it means to truly desire God. Together they reflect on Lent as a time to dig up the soil of the heart, so that the word of God can take root and bear fruit.
