The Blackout Murder in Wales: Who Killed Norah Bartlett? (Swansea, 1943)

Published 4 days, 6 hours ago
Description
A young woman is found strangled in a dark Swansea lane during wartime blackout rules. Norah Bartlett’s murder became one of Wales’ longest-running unsolved cases.

Norah Irene Bartlett was 33 years old when she was killed in November 1943 in the Brynmill area of Swansea, Wales. She had been walking home when she was attacked in a narrow lane off Rhyddings Park Road. Police confirmed she was sexually assaulted and strangled. No clear suspect was ever charged.

The killing took place under World War II blackout rules, when street lighting was restricted and patrol coverage was limited. Witnesses reported seeing Norah earlier that night with an American serviceman, but wartime records made tracing military personnel difficult.

Modern criminology has raised the possibility that her death may be linked to other South Wales wartime killings. The Norah Bartlett murder remains a major UK historical cold case and a reference point in British true crime research.
