Trump's DOJ purge has removed approximately 300 FBI agents, most of them counterterrorism and counter espionage specialists, since the start of the second term. Cash Patel fired 45 of them directly, while thousands more have left the broader DOJ, gutting decades of institutional knowledge and expertise. Former FBI agent and national security contributor Christopher Olirri calls it an "institutional decapitation," warning the country is now dangerously exposed to sophisticated foreign adversaries.

The timing could not be worse. Iranian state radio recently broadcast a series of random numbers in Farsi, believed by counterterrorism officials to be coded messaging to activate sleeper cells worldwide. A joint DHS, FBI and counterterrorism memo warning state and local law enforcement about heightened terrorist threats tied to the Iran conflict was blocked from distribution by the White House at the last minute. That five-page bulletin contained specific guidance for spotting and stopping attacks against American civilians.

Hawk also covers the ISIS-inspired bombing attempt at Gracie Mansion in New York City, where two men lobbed incendiary devices that failed to detonate at an anti-Muslim protest organized by Jake Lang, who has since been exposed for attempting to contact who he believed was a 15-year-old girl. Lang is a prominent Trump and ICE supporter.

The FBI agents and DOJ prosecutors who were fired were not volunteers on Trump-related cases. They were assigned by superiors. The retribution purge targeting anyone connected to the January 6th investigation, the Mueller probe, the Mar-a-Lago documents case, or Jack Smith's work has left national security dangerously undermanned.
