Catechesis – The Seven Sheddings of Christ’s Blood: The Scourging at the Pillar – Fr Peter George Flynn OFM

Published 2 months ago
Description

Fr. Peter turns to the fourth shedding of Christ’s blood — the scourging at the pillar. Beginning with the puzzle of why Pilate declared three times that he found no fault in Christ yet still ordered the punishment, Fr. Peter unpacks the political cynicism and moral cowardice that drove the decision, drawing a sharp parallel with anyone who convinces themselves they can do wrong now in order to do right later. He examines the Roman scorpion scourge, the Jewish limit of 39 stripes, and why the Romans observed no such limit. Drawing on St. Bonaventure — who records that the blood-stained pillar was still red twelve centuries later — and the vivid contemplative writing of St. Peter of Alcantara, Fr. Peter closes with a profound theological reflection: because Christ’s personhood existed from eternity, every drop of blood shed at that pillar was truly God.
