Catechesis – The Third Shedding of Blood: The Trial of Jesus – Fr Peter George Flynn OFM

Published 2 months ago
Description

Fr. Peter turns to the third shedding of Christ’s blood — the wounds inflicted on his face during the long night of his trial. Drawing on Isaiah’s prophecy of the suffering servant, St. Peter of Alcantara, Cardinal Newman and St. Bonaventure, he traces the abuse our Lord endured from the House of Annas to the house of Caiaphas: the blow that left a bruise visible on the Shroud of Turin, the spitting, the blindfolding, the mockery through the night. Fr. Peter reflects on why St. Bonaventure was right to single out the face, on the devotion to the Holy Face, and on Veronica’s veil — closing with a beautiful image of Christ leaving only a photographic negative of his face, so that its positive image might be developed individually in each of our hearts.
