Published 1 month, 1 week ago
Description
Norm Stockwell, publisher of The Progressive Magazine with a distinguished history in community radio himself, interviewed Frieda Werden, a pioneer of women’s community radio.
She spoke about the trajectory of her career which began with a series on women writers and a series on homosexuality at a college radio station in Texas, to NPR in New York, working on a docudrama about women writers.
She moved to San Francisco and with a grant from NPR’s satellite program development fund developed and created, with two other women, the Womens International News Gathering Service (WINGS) in 1986 – which continues to today.
Throughout her career she was involved in promoting not only communications, especially radio, but also women’s inclusion in media of all kinds. She has been recognized for her work with the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC), the Womens Institute for Freedom of the Press (WIFP), the International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT) and the Grassroots Radio Coalition.
