Back to EpisodesIlluminate Study: Light & Depression Treatments
Description
Flinders University researchers are embarking on a study, Illuminate, to explore how daily light exposure could enhance depression treatments. Led by Professor Sean Cain, the study investigates the connection between light, sleep, mood, and common antidepressants. With depression affecting over three hundred million people worldwide, this research aims to improve therapy effectiveness. Light significantly influences our circadian rhythm, which regulates sleep and emotions. However, modern indoor living disrupts this natural process. Many depression patients find their first antidepressant ineffective, with nearly half requiring alternative treatments. The Illuminate Study recruits adults aged eighteen to thirty-five with depression, who will undergo lab tests and home monitoring during an eight-week trial of Citalopram. Professor Cain will share early findings at a public forum on March thirteenth. Join the discussion by visiting the Illuminate Study website.
