The federal government has confirmed five Iranian football players will remain in Australia after seeking asylum.

Home Affairs Minister, Tony Burke, says he met with the women last night and told them they were "welcome to stay in Australia".

It follows US President Donald Trump confirming on social media overnight that he had spoken to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese about the team, and that he was quote "on it".
