Topanga Canyon Boulevard Reopens Ahead of Schedule: A Thorough Overview of the Repairs and Upcoming Work
The three-point-six-mile stretch of Topanga Canyon Boulevard, also known as State Route twenty-seven, has been reopened by Caltrans, months ahead of the planned summer timeline. The road now handles full daytime traffic from five a.m. to eight p.m. every day. The section was severely damaged by the Palisades Fire and harsh winter storms, but crews managed to complete a thirty-eight-point-five-million-dollar emergency fix, clearing over thirty-five thousand cubic tons of mud and debris.
The repairs have improved commutes during peak hours, eliminating long detours that had been a problem since the damage occurred. The work included fixing eroded slopes, replacing signs, and adding barriers and netting to prevent future slides.
While most of the work is complete, there are still a few tasks left, such as finishing two retaining walls and installing an eighty-four-inch concrete pipe for better storm drainage. Southern California Edison is also undergrounding cables, which will result in one-lane closures on weekdays from eight thirty a.m. to four thirty p.m. near Old Topanga Canyon Road.
In the coming months, expect a few long weekend shutdowns of up to fifty-five hours for pipe jobs, with at least two weeks notice. Telecom cable work will begin in early March, with nighttime lane controls from eight p.m. to midnight down near the highways start.
