कदाचित् कश्चन कुग्रामवासी कस्यचन धनिकस्य गृहं गत्वा जलं याचति । किन्तु धनिकः तस्य मलिनवस्त्रं दृष्ट्वा क्रुद्धः भूत्वा किमपि न यच्छति । अग्रे कदाचित् सः‌ धनिकः यदा मृगयार्थं गतः तदा मार्गभ्रष्टः सन् बहुधा अटित्वा अन्ते कुग्रामवासिनः गृहं प्राप्नोत् । किन्तु सः कुग्रामवासी धनिकाय जलं भोजनं शयनाय स्वस्य मञ्चं च दत्तवान् । अग्रिमदिने यदा धनिकः सुवर्णनाणकानि कुग्रामीणाय कृतज्ञतापूर्वकं दातुम् उद्यतः तदा कुग्रामवासी तत् निराकुर्वन् अवदत् 'जीवने धनम् आगच्छेत् गच्छेत् च । जीवने धनं मुख्यं न । यस्मिन् काले यस्य या आवश्यकता भवेत् सा पूरणीया । तादृशव्यवहारवान् एव उत्तमत्वेन ख्यातः भविष्यति' इति ।

Once, a poor villager went to a wealthy man’s house asking for water. Seeing his dirty clothes, the rich man grew angry and refused. Later, while hunting, the same rich man lost his way and, after wandering long, reached the poor villager’s hut. The villager welcomed him with water, food, and even his own bed to rest. The next day, the rich man tried to reward him with gold coins. But the villager declined, saying: “Wealth comes and goes; it is not the essence of life. What matters is fulfilling another’s need at the right time. Such conduct alone brings true honor”.
