We got a request this week (https://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.php?t=214223) for a 'shorter replacement encoder' for the MacroPad (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/5128/14635377). Traditionally, we use the PEC11 in a 15mm long flattened shaft, with detents and switch (https://www.digikey.com/short/8pjcn4nh), but they want something less! Let's look on DigiKey to see if shorter encoders are available, trying to keep the same footprint and mechanical features such as a switch, ~20 pulses per rotation, and detents.
