While the United States of America battled through the Civil War, it built a railroad from Omaha, Nebraska to Sacramento, California, a feat that no one believed could be done. After 6 years, 19 tunnels, blasting through the granite of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and overcoming up to 60 feet of snow during winter of 1866-1867, the tracks were built.
