Eastern Quolls Stage Comeback on Mainland Australia

Published 1 month ago
Description

Eastern quolls, or native cats, are making a remarkable return to mainland Australia after disappearing for over six decades. Conservationists have successfully reintroduced these endangered marsupials to a protected area in western Victoria, where they are now breeding successfully in the wild. The project, led by the South-West Eastern Quoll Hub, involved removing foxes and building predator-proof fences, creating a safe haven for the quolls. With twenty-seven quolls now released, including twelve males and seven females born on the mainland, the project is considered a huge success in its early stages. Plans are underway to establish more sanctuaries near Grampians National Park and beyond, ensuring the long-term genetic health of these spotted marsupials.
