Marian Anderson rose from humble beginnings in Philadelphia to become one of the most celebrated singers of the 20th century. After being barred from Constitution Hall in 1939, her historic Lincoln Memorial concert became a defining moment in the fight against racial discrimination. She later made history as the first African American performer at the Metropolitan Opera and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
