Published 4 days, 6 hours ago
Description

Juan Lagares, the Dominican-born former New York Mets center fielder, has retired from professional baseball. Known for his exceptional defensive skills, Lagares won the Gold Glove in 2014 and played eight seasons with the Mets, making his last major league appearance in 2022 with the Los Angeles Angels. Born in a mountainous town with no baseball teams, Lagares honed his skills playing softball before switching to hardball as a teen. He debuted in the majors in 2013, earning National League Player of the Week honors and a reputation for highlight-reel catches in center field. Despite injuries, Lagares posted 12.3 wins above replacement over 718 games with the Mets and played briefly with the Padres and Angels before retiring.
