New Pill-on-a-Thread Trial for Early Oesophageal Cancer Detection

Published 5 days, 23 hours ago
Description

A groundbreaking trial in Leicestershire is using a simple pill-on-a-thread to detect oesophageal cancer early. The capsule sponge test targets those over fifty-five with heartburn, checking for Barretts oesophagus, a precursor to cancer. Its faster and cheaper than traditional endoscopy, and trials are happening at a mobile unit in Coalville. Participants swallow a coated pill attached to a thread, which expands in the stomach to collect cells for testing. Shirley Woodhouse, a participant, found it uncomfortable but worth it. Stacey Chetwyn, who lost her fiancé to oesophageal cancer, supports the trial and urges people not to ignore symptoms. Early detection could save lives by spotting issues sooner.
