Global temperatures down in 2025
Description
Last year, global temperatures were cooled slightly by a natural weather pattern in the Pacific called La Niña. That meant it wasn't quite as hot as 2024, but the long-term trend is clear. The last 11 years were the hottest of all those recorded since the mid-19th century. And scientists fear that the planet could soon breach the long-term target of limiting the rise in global temperatures to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, possibly by the end of the decade.
Scientists say there's no doubt that this warming is caused by humanity's vast carbon emissions, mainly from burning fossil fuels.
