On this day in 1919, W.E.B. Du Bois organized the first Pan-African Congress in Paris as world leaders reshaped global power after World War I. Delegates from 15 countries demanded self-determination, fair labor practices and an end to colonial rule — planting seeds for 20th-century independence movements and the worldwide fight for Black liberation.
