Australian families with links to Islamic State fighters have been turned around, shortly after leaving a camp in Syria.

34 women and children left Al Roj camp in the country's north-east — bound for Damascus — with plans to head back to Australia.

But on the way to the capital, Syrian authorities told them to head back.
