Today, I invite Imani Mclemore to preach with me to read and break down the Song of Songs (also called Song of Solomon), one of the most overlooked and misunderstood books in the Bible. Because it’s written as an intense love poem, a lot of people ask why it’s included in Scripture at all. To help answer that question, I explain the purpose, the context, and what this book reveals about God-honoring romance, desire, and covenant love.

As we move chapter-by-chapter, Ms. Mclemore and I read the alternating voices of the man, the woman, and the friends, and we pause to unpack the imagery and relationship dynamics. We talk about mutual admiration, the role of healthy intimacy (beyond sex), and how modern culture confuses love with lust—especially through hypersexualized media, pornography, and public “intimacy” that erodes dignity.

I also hit key themes that show up repeatedly in the poem: patience and timing, separation and pursuit, conflict and reconciliation, and how community voices can either support or stir confusion in relationships. Ms. Mclemore and I both share perspective on what this kind of intentional love looks like compared to today’s dating culture, where situationships and lust-first connections have replaced devotion and honor.

To close, we share some minor Hebrew and literary notes and then end with a practical challenge: if you love someone, communicate it with intentionality—go beyond generic compliments and speak with detail, honor, and covenant-level consistency.
