US Plans Weeks-Long Strikes Against Iran
Ashdod refinery deaths spark oxygen canister recall
Stanford protest mistrial new trial planned

The time is now 10:01 PM in New York, I'm Noa Levi and this is the latest Israel Today: Ongoing War Report.

In the conflict with Iran and its Regional Proxies, the US military is preparing for the possibility of sustained, weeks-long operations against Iran if President Donald Trump orders an attack. Officials say the plan could involve strikes on Iranian state and security facilities, not only nuclear sites, and that Tehran is expected to retaliate with counterattacks. The Pentagon has signaled the deployment of an additional aircraft carrier to the Middle East, along with thousands more troops, fighter aircraft, guided-missile destroyers, and other firepower capable of conducting attacks and defending against them. Diplomats from the United States and Iran recently held talks in Oman aimed at reviving discussions over Tehran’s nuclear program in the wake of the broader buildup. President Trump, addressing troops at a base in North Carolina, acknowledged that reaching a deal with Iran has been difficult and said, "Sometimes you have to have fear. That's the only thing that really will get the situation taken care of."

In Israeli Domestic Politics, the Health Ministry has issued a directive to inspect all air and oxygen canisters in medical facilities after two women were found unresponsive in a lab at the Ashdod Refinery. The directive orders that all cylinders must be inspected to verify imprint, color, and label contents match, and that supplier identity is consistent; any cylinder not meeting these requirements must be taken out of service and labeled accordingly. All cylinders from the company Salem Yaakov and Sons are to be removed from service immediately. Health maintenance organizations are working to recall canisters used by home-ventilated patients and to provide alternatives. United Hatzalah has instructed all volunteers to comply. Earlier reports noted the deaths occurred at the refinery lab and that concerns about potentially toxic substances in oxygen cylinders prompted the safety measures.

Also in Israeli Domestic Politics, a mistrial was declared in the case of five current and former Stanford University students charged after anti-Israel pro-Palestinian protests in 2024. The trial in Santa Clara County ended without a verdict after the jury deadlocked on felony counts of vandalism and conspiracy to trespass following several hours of deliberation over three weeks. Judge Hanley Chew dismissed the jurors after they reported being unable to reach a verdict. Prosecutors said they will pursue a new trial. A defendant expressed resolve, saying, "we will continue to fight... because at the end of the day, this is for Palestine," highlighting the charged debate surrounding campus protests linked to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Also in Israeli Domestic Politics, new data released under a Freedom of Information request show that more than 50,000 IDF soldiers hold second passports, with many listing US, French and Russian citizenship, and some holding multiple foreign nationalities, including from Arab states.

In Uplifting News, Israel celebrated a historic moment at the European Championships when Yotam Glander won Israel’s first under-21 gold in Belgrade, defeating his Spanish opponent in the 52-kilogram division in under a minute with a rear-naked choke. The victory follows a string of strong showings by Israel’s teams, which earned 19 medals across age groups at the championships. Four Israeli referees—Ofer Lider, Arkady Sechkovsky, Shai Ofir, and Roi Ben Shalom—were on hand, and Ido Priente, president of the Israel MMA Association and Glander’s coach, described the European Championship as unprecedented for Israeli teams this year.
