The Soul Sleep Debate: What Really Happens When We Die?
Description
What really happens when we die? Jason Thomas tackles one of the most debated questions in the Bible — often called the soul sleep debate — starting from Genesis 2:7's definition of a "living soul" as body plus breath, and Ecclesiastes 9:5's declaration that "the dead know not any thing." Rather than just stating the doctrine, Jason works through the actual objections people raise against it: Elijah asking for the widow's son's life to "come into him again," the soul that "mourns" in Job 14, the souls crying out from under the altar in Revelation 6, and the common misquote that "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord."
Each objection is answered by going back to the Hebrew word nefesh and its range of meanings, and by reading contested passages in their fuller context — including 2 Corinthians 5, where Paul actually says believers are "willing rather" to be absent from the body, not that death itself is instant heaven. Jason also addresses the claim that Jesus "preached to spirits in prison" after His death, tracing it instead to the Holy Spirit's work through Noah, and closes with Acts 2:29-34's plain statement that David "is not ascended into heaven."
This message is for anyone who has heard conflicting answers about death, heaven, and the soul, and wants to work through the actual biblical texts for themselves.
