A three-sport star, he led his teams to state championships in football and baseball before choosing to stay in-state for college. At Duke University, Jurgensen became a legend, excelling as a quarterback and defensive back, leading the Blue Devils to the 1955 Orange Bowl and earning multiple All-ACC honors. Drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1957, Jurgensen initially served as a backup on the 1960 NFL Championship team. He truly blossomed in 1961, setting a then-record with 3,723 passing yards. In 1964, he was traded to the Washington Redskins, where his "golden arm" and pinpoint accuracy defined an era. Over his 18-season career, Jurgensen was a five-time Pro Bowler and led the league in passing yards five times. He retired in 1974 with 32,224 passing yards and 255 touchdowns, later becoming a beloved Washington broadcaster for nearly 40 years. A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1983), he remains a celebrated figure in the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
