The Green Bicycle Murder: Did Ronald Light Kill Bella Wright? (Little Stretton, Leicestershire, 1919)
Published 1 month, 1 week ago
Description
A young woman rides home along Gartree Road. Hours later, she is found dead with a gunshot wound to the face near Little Stretton.
On 5 July 1919, 21 year old factory worker Bella Wright was killed on a quiet country lane in Leicestershire. Witnesses last saw her cycling with a polite stranger riding a distinctive green bicycle. At first, her death was treated as a road accident until a doctor discovered a bullet wound below her eye.
The investigation led police to Ronald Light, a former army officer and schoolteacher. A green bicycle, revolver holster, and matching ammunition were later pulled from a canal. Light admitted being with Bella but claimed her death was a tragic accident caused by a stray bullet.
Despite strong circumstantial evidence, Light was acquitted in 1920. Key testimony was kept from the jury, and later police records hinted at a private confession.
The Green Bicycle Case remains one of the most disputed verdicts in British true crime and a lasting UK historical cold case.
