 No one has a national microphone in white living rooms. But social science does measure the “private vs. public” gap in racial attitudes using methods designed to reduce social desirability bias (people editing themselves to look socially acceptable). Reviews of this research show that norms against expressing prejudice change over time and can weaken after “trigger events” (elections, backlash cycles), which increases “backstage” expression.
