This week on Next Take Podcast, Canada’s own Mikel and Tanyka discuss Harriet Tubman in honor of their third annual Black History Month special.

Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist, freedom fighter, and one of the most influential figures associated with the Underground Railroad. Born into slavery in Maryland around 1822, Tubman escaped to freedom in 1849 but repeatedly risked her life by returning to help family members and others escape slavery.Over roughly a decade, Tubman made about 13 rescue missions into Maryland and personally guided approximately 70 people to freedom. Her fight for liberty continued during the American Civil War, when she served the Union as a nurse, scout, and spy and helped lead the historic Combahee River Raid in 1863. Later in life, she became an advocate for women's suffrage and continued supporting formerly enslaved African Americans. Tubman also had an important connection to Canada, living for a period in St. Catharines, Ontario, and helping freedom seekers establish new lives there. Her courage, leadership, and determination made her an enduring symbol of freedom and resistance against slavery.
