Pl: Zima.
En: Winter.

Pl: Śnieg zasypał drzewa.
En: Snow covered the trees.

Pl: Biel lasu była niemal oślepiająca w blasku zimowego słońca.
En: The whiteness of the forest was almost blinding in the glare of the winter sun.

Pl: Janusz, razem z Zofią i Mateuszem, przyjechali tutaj na wycieczkę szkolną z liceum.
En: Janusz, together with Zofia and Mateusz, had come here on a school trip from high school.

Pl: Nauczyciel opowiadał o historii tego miejsca, o żubrach i puszczach, które sięgają pamięcią daleko w przeszłość Polski.
En: The teacher talked about the history of this place, about the bison and forests, which reach far back in the memory of Poland.

Pl: Janusz, ciekawski i pełen energii, miał własny plan na tę wyprawę.
En: Janusz, curious and full of energy, had his own plan for this excursion.

Pl: Słyszał o rzadkim ptaku, który mieszka w tym lesie.
En: He had heard about a rare bird that lived in this forest.

Pl: Marzył, by go zobaczyć.
En: He dreamed of seeing it.

Pl: „To będzie świetne”, myślał, „imponujący wyczyn przed całą klasą.
En: "It will be great," he thought, "an impressive feat in front of the whole class."

Pl: ”Grupa szła szlakiem wydeptanym w śniegu.
En: The group walked along a trail trodden in the snow.

Pl: Janusz od czasu do czasu rozglądał się, czy przypadkiem nie zdoła dostrzec ruchu wśród gałęzi.
En: Janusz occasionally looked around to see if he could catch a glimpse of movement among the branches.

Pl: Z czasem oddalał się od grupy coraz bardziej.
En: Over time, he strayed further and further from the group.

Pl: Zofia i Mateusz zauważyli, że ich przyjaciel jest coraz wolniejszy.
En: Zofia and Mateusz noticed that their friend was lagging behind more and more.

Pl: „Chodź, Janusz!
En: "Come on, Janusz!"

Pl: ” wołała Zofia, ale Janusz odpowiadał tylko: „Jeszcze chwilę, zaraz was dogonię!
En: Zofia called, but Janusz only replied: "Just a moment, I'll catch up with you soon!"

Pl: ”W pewnym momencie las stał się cichszy.
En: At a certain point, the forest became quieter.

Pl: Janusz zatrzymał się, serce mu zabiło szybciej.
En: Janusz stopped, his heart beating faster.

Pl: Śnieg amortyzował jego kroki.
En: The snow muffled his steps.

Pl: Usłyszał wtedy delikatny szmer skrzydeł.
En: Then he heard a gentle rustle of wings.

Pl: „Tam!
En: "There!"

Pl: ” pomyślał i przyspieszył.
En: he thought and sped up.

Pl: Już niedaleko, widział ruch w gałęziach sosny.
En: Not far ahead, he saw movement in the pine branches.

Pl: Był pewien, że to ten ptak.
En: He was sure it was the bird.

Pl: Jednak gdy podbiegł, las wokół niego wydawał się taki sam.
En: However, when he caught up, the forest around him seemed the same.

Pl: Janusz obrócił się wkoło.
En: Janusz turned around.

Pl: Nie było śladów grupy ani dźwięku ich głosów.
En: There was no sign of the group or the sound of their voices.

Pl: „Zgubiłem się!
En: "I'm lost!"

Pl: ” poczuł narastający niepokój.
En: he felt a growing anxiety.

Pl: Próbował sobie przypomnieć drogę, ale każda ścieżka wyglądała podobnie.
En: He tried to remember the way, but every path looked alike.

Pl: Decyzja przyszła szybko.
