Description

In this episode of Words of Life, we launch a brand-new series spotlighting Christian writers, creatives, and publishers within The Salvation Army. Cohost, Chris Benjamin is joined by Kristen Mudge, Southern Territorial Publications Editor, to explore calling, creativity, and the spiritual practice of journaling.

Kristen shares her unexpected journey into vocational ministry through writing—from studying media communications and film at Asbury University to serving in youth and women’s ministries, and ultimately discerning God’s call into editorial leadership. As editor of Southern Spirit, The Salvation Army’s monthly publication, Kristen helps tell stories of faith, mission, and transformation while encouraging writers across the territory to use their gifts for God’s glory.

The conversation turns personal as Kristen reflects on her lifelong practice of journaling and how it has shaped her spiritual life. She describes journaling as a way to slow down, untangle racing thoughts, and intentionally listen for God’s voice. Through handwritten prayers, reflective processing, and even written “conversations” with God, journaling has become a powerful spiritual discipline that deepens her relationship with Christ.

This episode invites listeners to consider how God may already be using their gifts in ways they haven’t yet imagined—and how simple practices like journaling can become sacred spaces for prayer, discernment, and spiritual growth.
