Wednesday of Septuagesima Week continues the Church’s meditation on the Fall, focusing on the judgment pronounced after Adam and Eve’s sin and the profound mercy that accompanies divine justice. Unlike fallen humanity, our first parents sinned without concupiscence or ignorance, through sheer ingratitude and self-love; yet God, who did not spare the rebellious angels, chose to spare the human race because all humanity was contained in them. Before condemning Adam and Eve, God first curses the serpent and utters the great promise of hope: the protoevangelium, in which the woman and her seed are foretold as the serpent’s defeat. This promise looks forward to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to all who, in weakness, cooperate with God’s victory over evil. Born in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, he entered the priesthood in 1827 and, inspired by a vision to restore monastic life, reestablished the Benedictine community at Solesmes in 1833, becoming its first abbot.
