Groundhog Day is an annual tradition celebrated on February 2 in Canada and the United States. According to folklore, if a groundhog emerges from its burrow and sees its shadow, winter will continue for another six weeks. If it does not see its shadow, an early spring is expected. The tradition has roots in European weather folklore and the Christian observance of Candlemas. German immigrants later brought similar customs to Pennsylvania, where the groundhog replaced animals such as the badger as the seasonal weather predictor. The most famous celebration takes place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where Punxsutawney Philhas become an iconic part of the tradition. Today, Groundhog Day is less about scientific weather forecasting and more about folklore, community celebration, and the anticipation of spring.
