Behind the UN’s Financial Crisis U.S. Nonpayment and China’s “Late Payments”
Description
In this episode, I talk through a recent news story about the United Nations facing a financial crisis due to unpaid and delayed contributions from major member states.
Rather than taking a strong position, I try to understand how the UN is funded, why nonpayment and late payment have become an issue, and what this situation says about the current state of international cooperation. I also look at the different ways the United States and China approach their obligations, and how those differences affect the organization as a whole.
This is not an argument or a conclusion, but a second-hand reflection—thinking out loud about an imperfect system that still plays a role in preventing worse outcomes, and what it might mean if that system continues to weaken.
