According to tradition, her steadfast prayer caused pagan temples to be shaken and idols to fall, bearing witness to the power of Christ even in her sufferings. At last she was put to death by the sword, sealing her testimony with martyrdom. Born in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, he entered the priesthood in 1827 and, inspired by a vision to restore monastic life, reestablished the Benedictine community at Solesmes in 1833, becoming its first abbot.
