Trunk Murders: The Brighton Railway Killings (Brighton, Sussex, 1934)

Description
A locked trunk at Brighton railway station leaked blood through its seams in June 1934. Inside was a young pregnant woman, carefully wrapped, her identity removed forever.

The Brighton Trunk Murders refer to a series of linked discoveries between 1927 and 1934 in Brighton, Sussex, where dismembered bodies were hidden in luggage and left at busy railway stations. The most haunting case involved an unidentified woman known only as the Girl with Pretty Feet, five months pregnant, her head and arms never found.

As police launched Britain’s first nationwide public appeal, the investigation spiralled into confusion. False leads flooded in. Key evidence was mishandled. At the same time, another trunk revealed the body of Violette Kaye, killed by her partner Tony Mancini, who was later acquitted despite years of suspicion and a later confession.

This UK historical cold case exposes deep flaws in early forensic science, the limits of justice, and why one of Britain’s most disturbing murder investigations still matters today in British true crime history.
