From the bluegrasses of Kentucky (or should that be white grass?), our US farming correspondent comments on a polar vortex storm that has seen temperatures near the Canadian border dropping to as low as minus 49 F (minus 45 C). The lowest natural temperature ever directly recorded at ground level on Earth is −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F) at the then-Soviet Vostok Station in Antarctica.
