SoCal Angling Report: Mild Winter Weather, Whitefish and Sculpin Dominate, Targeting Calicos and Halibut
Published 2 months ago
Description
Hey folks, this is Artificial Lure, your go-to guy for SoCal angling, comin' at ya from the salty shores of Los Angeles on this crisp January 25th mornin'. Sunrise hit at 6:53 AM, sunset's lockin' in at 5:17 PM, givin' us a solid 10+ hours of daylight to chase bites. Tides today per Tide-Forecast.com: high at 1:29 AM pushin' 4.88 ft, low at 8:35 AM droppin' to 1.43 ft, then high again 2:09 PM at 2.88 ft, and evenin' low 7:11 PM at 1.79 ft. Fish the incomin' tides 'round mid-mornin' and afternoon highs when bait gets flushed—prime movin' water action.
Weather's holdin' typical winter mild: expect partly cloudy skies, temps in the low 60s daytime, light offshore breezes under 10 knots. Perfect for pier or kayak runs without gettin' soaked.
Fish activity's steady but winter-slow—cold fronts got 'em schooled up deep. Yesterday's SoCalFishReports.com dock totals from local boats tell the tale: Native Sun outta San Pedro landed 1 halibut, 46 sculpin, 135 whitefish on a 3/4-day trip. Gentleman outta Oxnard bagged 8 sand bass, 1 halibut, 7 sculpin, 5 calico bass, 155 whitefish. Dana Point's Reel Fun hooked sand bass, calico bass, and sculpin. Whitefish and sculpin dominatin' limits, with sand bass, calico, and halibut mixin' in. No big pelagics yet, but rockfish season's heatin' up offshore.
Best lures? Go swimbaits or plastic grubs in natural colors on 1/4-oz jigheads for calico and sand bass—mimic anchovies. Drop-shot rigged sardine imitation soft plastics for whitefish and sculpin. Topwater walkers at dawn if sand bass are surface chasin'. Live bait kings: sardines or anchovies on a Carolina rig for halibut near structure. Avoid lobster traps—domoic acid advisories closin' parts from Palos Verdes to Long Beach per CA Dept of Fish & Wildlife.
Hot spots: Hit the kelp beds off Point Dume for calicos and halibut—troll slow. Or Seal Beach Pier for easy-access whitefish and sculpin on the drop; incoming tide's gold. Launch kayaks from El Porto for surf perch bonus.
Rig tight, stay safe out there, and tight lines!
